How to Calculate your distance from an ADSL Telephone Exchange
Which Exchange are you on?
The first thing you need to do is work out which telephone exchange you are connected to. The easiest way to do this is to do a search using the tools provided at Whirlpool.
Click on this link:
http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc-exchange.cfm
Enter your phone number in the space provided and do a search. You should get
a result something like this
Find the address of the Exchange
Now that you know the name of your Exchange, you need to find the address of this exchange. Click on the following link.http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/index.cfm?a=wiki&tag=Australian_Exchange_Guide
Down the bottom of the page, you will find a list of states.

Click on the link for your state, and find your Exchange in the list.
Find the Cable distance from your house to the Exchange
The next step is to make an approximation of how long the telephone cable is
between your house and the Exchange. The easiest way to do this is to use Google Maps.
Go to Google Maps
Search for the address of your Exchange

Then using the Google Maps travelling instructions, click "from here", and then
enter your home address as the "to here" option. This will then give you driving
instructions between the exchange and your house. Note in the left hand panel that
the total distance travelled is available.

Now this is just an approximation to how long the cabling is, however it is a much
better approximation than "as the crow flies".
